Proper maintenance extends the life of blinds, preserves their appearance and — for B2B partners — directly reduces complaints. Most damage comes not from use but from incorrect cleaning: too much water on wood, harsh chemicals on fabric, or rolling up a damp blind that then keeps stains and odour.
The key is that each material needs its own method. In this guide we give the correct cleaning method for every type in our range — zebra and roller fabric, ZIP systems, wooden venetian blinds and pergolas — with advice you can pass on to your client as a partner.
General rules
Whatever the material, these principles always apply:
- Regular dusting prevents dust from binding with moisture into stubborn stains.
- Always test first on a hidden spot (bottom corner) before applying any product.
- Never use abrasives or harsh chemicals — bleach, acetone and rough agents damage both fabric and coatings.
- Blot, don't rub — rubbing stretches the fibres and leaves a mark.
- Dry fully before rolling up — a damp blind that is rolled up catches mildew and odour.
Zebra and roller blinds (fabric)
Zebra (day-night) and roller fabrics are delicate textiles — zebra especially, because of its alternating sheer and solid bands. Treat them gently.
- Regularly: dust with a soft brush or a vacuum on the lowest power (upholstery attachment), top to bottom.
- Stains: lukewarm water + a drop of neutral detergent on a soft cloth; blot the stain, don't rub.
- Do not soak — water in the mechanism and between the two fabric layers causes damage and marks.
- Do not machine wash or iron — the fabric and coating cannot take it.
- Let it dry fully while lowered, then raise it.
ZIP systems (external)
ZIP fabrics are technical and more robust than indoor textiles, but they are exposed outside — to dust, pollen and weather.
- Shake off dust and leaves, then wash with water and mild soap and a soft brush; rinse well.
- Clean the side guides and the edges where the fabric enters the guide — dirt collects there and hinders operation.
- Before winter, clean and let it dry; folding it away damp leaves marks.
- Check that the housing is free of debris and the fabric rolls up evenly.
Wooden venetian blinds
Wood is the most sensitive to moisture, so the rule is simple: the drier, the better.
- Dry dusting with a microfibre cloth or soft brush, slat by slat (or with a special venetian-blind brush).
- Avoid water — wood absorbs moisture, swells and can warp.
- Stubborn marks: a barely damp cloth, then wipe dry immediately.
- Do not use oils or silicone sprays — they give a short-lived shine but attract dust over time.
- Occasionally check the tapes and cords (the lifting mechanism).
Pergolas
A pergola is an outdoor structure with moving parts — maintenance is more a "seasonal check" than daily cleaning.
- Aluminium: rinse with water (mild soap for stubborn dirt); do not use abrasives so the protective coating is not damaged.
- Water drainage: clear gutters and drainage channels of leaves — a blocked drain is the most common cause of problems.
- Moving parts: check and, if needed, lightly lubricate the louvres/joints per the instructions.
- If the pergola also has a fabric/retractable cover, clean it like outdoor textile and dry before retracting.
- Do a check before and after winter.
What to avoid
The mistakes that most often cause permanent damage:
- Abrasive sponges and rough agents (they leave scratches and dull marks).
- Harsh chemicals — bleach, acetone, strong solvents.
- Soaking fabric panels and machine washing.
- Wetting wood and too much water on venetian blinds.
- Raising/folding away a damp blind.
🗓️ A rough maintenance schedule
| Weekly | Dusting (zebra, roller, venetian) with a soft brush/vacuum. |
| Monthly | More thorough stain cleaning as needed; check mechanism operation. |
| Seasonally | ZIP and pergola: washing, cleaning guides/drains, check before/after winter. |
| Annually | Check tapes, cords and moving parts; lubricate if needed. |
Tips for partners (B2B)
Proper maintenance is part of the experience your client has with the product — and part of your credibility:
- Provide a short care sheet with delivery, by fabric type — it prevents incorrect cleaning and complaints.
- Emphasise what NOT to do (water on wood, machine washing fabric) — that is where most damage happens.
- For demanding projects (hotels, HoReCa) propose a maintenance plan as part of the offer.

Maintaining blinds is not complicated — but it is material-specific. Fabric needs gentle, dry cleaning and full drying; wood needs dryness; outdoor systems need a seasonal check. When the right method is followed, blinds look like new for years, and you get fewer complaints and happier clients.
